Merry Christmas World

Sarah McLaughlin - World on Fire

It’s Christmas time again.  My kids are excited.  The youngest are expecting Santa to bring some great presents.  My oldest knows the scoop on Santa but there is still excitement about a celebration that includes presents.

We work hard to teach our kids about the true meaning of Christmas.  It’s difficult in our culture because Madison Avenue tells children and adults that Christmas is about stuff.

If you’re a Christian, then Christmas should be about the birth of Jesus and what that means to our world.  However, even if you’re not a Christian, shouldn’t this time of celebration be about more than just stuff?

What if Americans used this holiday time to give presents to a world that needs so much, rather than to ourselves when we already have so much that we don't know what to do with it all?

Of course, this is no way to get out of a recession.  We’re told we have to spend, spend, spend, spend.  I read an article in the Chronicle that actually said Americans were now saving too much and that was the reason for our economic turmoil.  How dare us start to pay off our credit cards!
